Fatter than an Ox, Larger than a Horse, a Lion’s Head, Teeth like swords, a horse’s mane, Six bear legs and claws, a serpent’s tail and the shell of a turtle as sharp as an ax.
The Tarasque is the offspring of the Leviathan mentioned in the Book of Job and the legendary Onachus living in the river Rhodes in the marshes between Arles and Avignon near the town of Tarascon. Many attempts were made to fend off the dragon beast from killing and eating the village people wandering too close to the water or trying to cross the river but all failed while it lurked underwater. The King of Nerluc had sent his knights and catapults to fight off the creature but it proved to be impossible to kill.
Until St. Martha had come to the village with a little Holy Water, a wooden cross and her girdle. Some stories say she tamed the beast and a fearful village killed it (Beauty and the Beast Anyone?) while others claim she restrained the dragon allowing the village to finally kill the beast.
