It is also one of the oldest recorded botanical poisons with references going back as far as 1550 B.C. It is found through out history, it is named Atropa Belladonna in honor of the third and eldest Greek Fate, Atropos, associated as a common plaything and ingredient for witches. Rumored to be the poison that killed Roman Emperor Augustus, and part of Venetian medieval beauty routine, putting drops of atropine to dilate women’s pupils. Nightshade contains high levels of atropine and scopolamine, both are so toxic that the smallest amount ingested can cause hallucinations, convulsions and seizures, even touching the plant can even raise blisters on the skin. The berries of the Nightshade are a highly glossed green turning to dark purple black in an alluring deep color with a seductively sweet taste unlike the usual bitter taste of dangerous plants. Eating one berry may not kill you, but the berry right next to it could. Belladonna charms you into eating the sweet fruit so that it can use your body to nourish and protect the seeds so that it may grow on after your death.

🌿

While each color has its own specific recipe every skein is individually hand dyed and hand painted which may cause colors to vary in distribution.
If using more than one skein in a project I recommend alternating skeins.

Wicked Seeds

Nectar 60% SW Merino | 20% Yak | 20% Silk | 100G | 400 yds

Larkspur

This month’s wicked seed installment is the birth flower of July, the Larkspur. Named for its resemblance of the crooked claw of a Lark this tall Delphinium flowers comes in a range of pinks, red and whites but it is most popularly known for its vibrant purple and blue tones. Originating in the Mediterranean area the Larkspur traveled north to the UK in the 1500s and has been recorded to be brought over to the America’s by the 1600s quickly naturalizing and spreading around its new home in fields and roadside pastures. Despite the entire plant being toxic their brillant colors made this plant wildly popular in romantic cottage gardens. The roots and seeds are said to the the most dangerous part of this plant (although the plant itself becomes less toxic as their blooming season goes on) containing neuromuscular blockers causing those who ingest it to go into cardiac arrest and some recorded seizures usually killing them in a few hours. Similar to many of the Wicked Seeds plants part of the Larkspur is also ground down and can be used for medicines to heal wounds, treat bug bites and studies are being done about its use to treat neurological disorders. Cattle are the most common victims of the Larkspur and ranchers have to rotate pastures with the seasons to keep their livestock from the plants in its most potent stages but sometimes can send in a secret weapon. Sheep. Domesticated Sheep are immune to the Larkspurs toxins and are commonly sent out ahead of cattle to graze through the Larkspur patches making way for the rest of the livestock in the area.

Wormwood also known as Mugwort, a bitter herb, is most notable known for being an ingredient in Absinthe. Both berries and roots contain a toxin called arione that give the plant a bitter taste and cause burning and blistering. This is where the beauty comes in.

Belladonna

Deadly Nightshade is one of the most well known and most sinister reputation as a poisonous plant.

Bluebells

Bluebells have been another popular flower that signifies the beginning of Spring.
